The Mutzenbacher is a restaurant in Friedrichshain that combines Austrian specialties with down-to-earth German cuisine. The rustic interior is decorated with quirky accessories and is somewhat reminiscent of a cozy ski lodge in the middle of the mountains. This creates a relaxed atmosphere in which the original Wiener Schnitzel tastes just as good as other culinary Alpine dishes. The concept is unique in the capital. The family atmosphere and warm hospitality are at the forefront.
Culturally, the jocular name of the Austrian restaurant in Berlin is reminiscent of the well-known and slightly disreputable novel by Felix Salten, which tells of the life of a prostitute in Vienna. It’s no coincidence that Mutzenbacher’s second name is “Schnitzelpuff” and it serves home-made dishes with a clever wink.
The boutique hotel-style restaurant is located on Libauer Straße and focuses on fun and a mountain hut atmosphere. Simple dishes are prepared with selected and fresh products, while the kitchen is expanded to include hearty dishes in winter. The menu includes starters such as Kaspressknödel, caramelized goat’s cheese, spinach dumplings and Blunzentascherl. The schnitzel is available pounded wafer-thin from veal or, for vegetarians, from celery. Tuesdays are “Cordon Bleu Day”, while the dessert highlights are Kaiserschmarrn pancakes, apple strudel refined with rum and yeast dumplings.
