In the Old-Berlin restaurant Ausspanne you can find a piece of Berlin’s culture and excellent German cuisine, modern and exquisitely interpreted. Auspanne belongs to the family-run Hotel Kastanienhof on Kastanienallee in Mitte and is still a real insider tip. With a large, bright glass front, the interior of the new restaurant spreads the charm of an old Berlin pub and you can immerse yourself in the history of Berlin.
On the walls you find antique photographs, which document the career of the Kastanienhof. All the finds and souvenirs from Berlin’s oldest breweries and other old-established Berlin institutions are exhibited in glass showcases and original metal plates from the past are mounted to the walls. A highlight is the original barrel organ on the upper floor – a jewel that is already over 100 years old. In addition to the warm and welcoming atmosphere the emphasis is on modern and exclusive German cuisine. The seasonal menu changes every five to six weeks and offers a perfectly adequate and above all surprising selection of starters, main courses and desserts. Every dish is prepared with love and always shows a refined twist to typical German food. A “Senfei” is also breaded here and the veal liver “Berliner Art” or a classic roast beef are interpreted in a modern yet traditional way.
Vegetarians are also welcome to consult with kitchen chef André Pilz. The down-to-earth chef conjures also meatless alternatives if desired, and you can clearly see the passion for cooking and skill for his craftsmanship in all his dishes. The range offers upscale German cuisine at fair prices as well as a round selection of regional beers and wines. The service is also convincing and if you are interested in the history of the chestnut farm and the horseradish, you will be glad to have a personal guide to the many hidden treasures in the restaurant. On request, family and company celebrations can also be arranged with a menu or a buffet.
