Eating at La Soupe Populaire starts in the robust ambience of the former Bötzow Brewery with home made bread with lard as complimentary taste bud teaser. The down-to-earth approach continues with rustic classics like Königsberger Klopse, mashed potatoes and Bienenstich. “Everything fairly normal…” you may think, but only until you have sampled them. Raue’s recipes get skillfully prepared by Michael Jaeger, formerly of the Grill Royal.
The Königsberger Klopse for example get prepared with minced veal, sweetbread and veal tongue to be garnished with buttered bread crumbs. The Bienenstich cake hides between the top layer of crunchy almond brittle and the biscuit floor a cream filling with a touch of apricot sorbet as finisher and a little bee made of almonds as garnish.
If you are looking for something a little more extraordinary, you may find the matching dish to the current arts exhibition on the special menu. So, paintings from Rio de Janeiro find their culinary equivalent in dishes with lime, coriander and sweet potatoes.
Top10 team’s tip: why not take a downer in the neighbouring bar Le Croco bleu?
