Opened in 2016, The Wall Museum East Side Gallery offers an overview of the history of the Berlin Wall on a total area of around 300 square metres. Visitors are informed about the causes of the construction of the Berlin Wall, learn about the separation of families and come to know about the process of the fall of the Wall. Historical events that shaped the Cold War in Germany are presented in 13 chronologically ordered themed rooms.
The exhibition begins with the post-war period, the hardening of relations between East and West, and the founding of the two German states, the Federal Republic and the GDR. The exhibition focuses on the various effects of the division of Germany.
The last third of the exhibition is dedicated to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the German reunification. The events of 1989/90 will be illuminated and one room will be dedicated to well-known musicians and artists of the time. The museum is located in the former mill warehouse near the East Side Gallery, the longest surviving original piece of the Berlin Wall.
