The Müggelturm (Müggel Tower) in the southeast of Berlin is located in one of Berlin’s most beautiful forest areas. The viewing platform of the tower is 30 metres high and offers a magnificent panoramic view over the Müggelberge mountains and the Müggelsee lake as far as Berlin. If the weather is fine, the view extends from Rüdersdorf via Schönefeld Airport to Alexanderplatz.
The Müggelturm, newly built in 1961, was a popular excursion destination in the GDR. After twenty years of vacancy and decay, it was extensively renovated for four years and reopened on 1 May 2018. The aim of the renovation work was to preserve a large part of the listed building, primarily the tower itself.
The observation tower is open to the public. However, one has to be good on foot. 126 steps have to be climbed until one is rewarded by a magnificent view. Afterwards, one can strengthen oneself in the barrier-free excursion restaurant Baude in the basement and in the newly opened and also renovated restaurant Hauptmann that offers space for approximately 200 guests. There is also a spacious sun terrace with a view of the Müggelberge mountains.
The Müggelberg mountain with its 114.7 metres is the highest elevation in Berlin. It is surrounded by many possibilities for jogging, hiking and cycling. With the Müggelturm Tower in Berlin-Köpenick, Berlin has regained a landmark.
