The white crosses are commemorating those who lost their lives trying to overcome the GDR border fortifications to escape from East Germany.
Originally these mementoes were put up at all places where people died trying to escape from East Germany by a Berlin citizens’ association.
In the meantime the white crosses have been concentrated in two places, on the banks of the Spree close to the Reichstag and on Bernauer Straße. A plate along the Geschichtsmeile Berliner Mauer supplies information about the memorial “White Crosses” close to the Reichstag.
