According to a survey by the German Tourist Association DTV, the Brandenburg Gate is the most popular sight in Berlin and the second-most popular landmark all over Germany. Though it can look back on a history of around 200 years, the Brandenburg Gate as a symbol stays inseparably linked to Germany’s division and reunification.
Today it provides the historical backdrop for large events such diverse as official state acts, free concerts and a party on New Year’s Eve. The party crowd on New Year’s Eve 1989/1990 partied so excessively that after the party the quaridga on top of the Brandenburg Gate had to undergo restauration.
