A nice family excursion is a visit to one of the fruit farms in the surroundings of Berlin, where you can pick strawberries yourself and snack to your heart’s content, for example in Berlin’s Beerengärten. German strawberries are available from the end of May to July, so you can usually pick them yourself during this period of time.
The Berlin Beerengärten offer self-picking at six locations for strawberries and blueberries. The sweet red strawberries can be picked at the Beerengarten site in Falkensee, for example.
You take a basket, pick and finally let the fruits weigh and pay by weight. Snacking in between is allowed.
The aching back is worth it, because Pliny, Vergil and Ovid have already sung about the strawberry, the “queen” of soft fruit species. Originally collected as wild strawberries, this delicious fruit has been cultivated in England and France since the 16th/17th century. Over the years, larger fruits have been obtained by breeding.
Tip from the Top10 editors: After your own harvest you go home happy, full and a little sticky. It is advisable to bring sunscreen or a small, thin scarf, because you like to burn your neck when picking.
