The beautiful Spreewald is located around 70 kilometers southeast of Berlin. With its lagoon river scenery and a network of 970 km of rivers the Spreewald is unique in Europe. The biosphere reserve of the Spreewald is under protection of the UNESCO. The most popular and easiest way to explore the Spreewald is by barge ride. The season for boat trips usually starts in April and lasts until October. In high season the boats leave hourly from several harbors all across Spreewald. Most barge rides take about two to three hours, so they can be well managed as part of a weekend trip. However, the boats are not just important for visitors, but also still used by the inhabitants of the Spreewald to get to work or to go for shopping. Historically, the boats were used for transportation of goods and cattle in the water maze, but also as postal vehicles.
Barge rides start from many places in the Spreewald, for example from Burg, Lehde, Lübbenau or Lübben. In Lübben especially families with children get their costs, because there is also a climbing forest and a hill labyrinth – a place to perfectly connect with an adventurous barge ride.
