Tresor Club: From the Wertheim Cellar to the Power Plant

On March 13, 1991, Tresor opened in the vault of the former Wertheim department store on Leipziger Straße, a 1926 vault that was located in no man’s land after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Dimitri Hegemann and his associates turned it into the address where Detroit and Berlin found each other, and founded the Tresor Records label in the same year. The last party took place on April 16, 2005, and shortly thereafter the building was demolished. After two years in exile, the club reopened at the end of May 2007 in the disused southern part of the Berlin-Mitte heating power plant on Köpenicker Straße, and the original lockers from the Wertheim cellar were installed there. The label remains the second pillar of the house to this day, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2026, and its sister club Tresor.West in Dortmund continues the name.

Vault, Globus and a Power Plant from the Year the Wall Was Built

A tunnel of around thirty meters leads into the Vault, the basement floor, where hard techno in the Detroit and industrial vein plays. On the ground floor, Globus plays House and Electro, complemented by the +4 Bar with a Lambda Labs system, the Aurora Bar, and in summer, the Tuna Garden. Around a thousand people fit into the venue. The power plant itself was built between 1960 and 1964, with three blocks of 32 megawatts each, commissioned in the year the Wall was built to supply the east of the city; since 2010, the event hall Kraftwerk Berlin has been using the hundred-meter-long turbine hall in the same building. OHM is a separate club within the building and not a Tresor floor. Filming and photography are forbidden, the cloakroom operates via lockers that can be opened by NFC and an app, and since July 2026, there has been a community ticket available at the door for reduced entry against a social ticket or official notification.
