MYKITA glasses are handmade in Berlin. The Berlin eyewear factory produces glasses with a special patented eyeglass joint, that is not soldered or screwed, but specially bent and folded. MYKITA was founded by four friends in Berlin in 2003. As there was a children’s daycare (German: Kita) in the first premises of MYKITA, the name is the combination of “My” and “KITA”.
The founders constructed glasses made of light-weight stainless steel, in which the front end of the glass strap is rolled into a kind of spiral and hung into the front of the eyeglasses. All components of the glasses are developed from one surface and become a three-dimensional object only by bending and folding, similar to the Japanese folding technique Origami. The frame does not hold the glass, but the glass gives its support to the light frame. The concept thus reverts to the usual standards of eyeglass production.
Today the glasses are made in the MYKITA HAUS, a brick building in the Brunnenstrasse in Mitte. All production steps from design, manufacturing, customer service, communication and marketing are carried out manually in Berlin
MYKITA combines classical craftsmanship with new technologies, while the technical solution is always also an aesthetic one at the same time. MYKITA glasses are made of acetate and Mylon. The self-developed material MYKITA MYLON is made of polyamide and is extremely light but strong enough at the same time. The material MYKITA MYLON therefore perfectly combines sportswear and accessories. MYKITA MYLON is awarded the Red Dot Design Award. Among other things MYKITA also received the GERMAN DESIGN AWARD.
Many celebrities are fan of the avantgarde MYKITA glasses. Sarah Jessica Parker aka Carrie Bradshaw wore a gold MYKITA goggle in “Sex and the City 2”. Also Lady Gaga, Elton John and Daniel Craig are fan of the glasses from Berlin.
The MYKITA collection includes classics and futuristic eyewear as well as glasses for kids and teens, eyeglasses constructed in cooperation with designers such as Maison Margiela and sunglasses. The MYKITA collections are available in shops in Berlin, Paris, New York, Copenhagen, Tokyo, Washington, and others. The MYKITA stores all around the world are light and minimalist, equipped with a white “MYKITA Wall”. In addition to the sale of glasses, services such as eye measurements and individual glass adjustments are also offered in the shops.
